What is an ecommerce quiz
An ecommerce quiz is an interactive multi-step form embedded on a Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, or Wix store that asks the shopper a sequence of guided questions and then recommends products, content, or a routine that matches the answers. Unlike a survey, the goal is not market research. The goal is to convert a browser into a buyer by removing the cognitive load of searching a 200-SKU catalogue.
Fig. 01 An ecommerce quiz converts a few guided questions into a matched product set. Five to seven questions is the modal length; 60 to 90 seconds is the modal duration.
A typical ecommerce quiz has three jobs
01
Recommend
Map answers to one or more products on the results page using voting, scoring, or fixed logic. See six recommendation systems compared.
02
Capture data
Every answer is structured zero-party data that the shopper volunteers consciously. More durable than session cookies.
03
Personalise
Hand the answers to Klaviyo, HubSpot, or Shopify Flows so the post-quiz email sequence references what the shopper told you.
5 types of ecommerce quizzes
Most quizzes you'll see fall into five buckets. The choice depends on whether the goal is matching, segmenting, or educating.
Fig. 02 The five formats compared. Type 1 is what most merchants need; types 2 and 3 are vertical variants of the same recommendation logic; types 4 and 5 sit on top of different jobs (gifting and lead capture).
Type 01
Product recommendation quiz
Match SKUs to needs.
Five to seven questions feed voting, scoring, or fixed-list logic. The results page shows three to five matched products. The default format for most stores.
Best for: 20-500 SKU catalogues, where the buyer can't decide on their own.
5.5%
conversion benchmark
Type 02
Personality or archetype quiz
Result is a label.
Four to ten questions tally votes for variables (A, B, C). The variable with the most hits decides the outcome: a dosha, a hair archetype, a style identity.
Best for: Dosha quizzes, hair archetypes, style quizzes, brand archetype tests.
Shareable
organic reach lift
Type 03
Skin, hair, or style diagnostic
Result is a routine.
Vertical-specific recommendation logic with clinical question framing. The result is a routine of three to five products organised into steps, with education layered on top.
Best for: Skincare, haircare, supplements, and any beauty vertical.
Higher AOV
routine bundles
Type 04
Gift finder
Recipient-first match.
Three to six questions about the recipient (relationship, occasion, budget) produce a curated shortlist. Conversion is lower than recommendation quizzes but AOV is higher because gift carts include wrap-and-card add-ons.
Best for: Q4 and gifting-calendar peaks (Valentine's, Mother's Day, Father's Day).
Higher AOV
wrap, card add-ons
Type 05
Knowledge or assessment quiz
Report for email.
Lead-magnet format. The shopper takes a "what's your X score" quiz and trades email for a personalised report. The sale happens through the post-quiz email sequence.
Best for: Top-of-funnel lead capture; assessments that route into a product later.
30-50%
email capture rate
Real ecommerce quiz examples
The clearest way to see what works is to watch the brands that built their growth on it. Four worth studying, with deeper coverage in our ecommerce sales funnel examples listicle (11 brands in full).
Function of Beauty
Custom-formulated bottle in 6-8 questions.
Hair type, goals, scent, and colour generate a named, custom bottle. The quiz isn't an add-on; it is the storefront. Carried the brand to unicorn-status valuation in 2020.
HUM Nutrition
45-minute consultation in 3 minutes.
Multi-step diagnostic produces a personalised nutrition report. "Build Routine + $10 OFF" closes the funnel, with a registered dietitian included as the trust-builder.
Trade Coffee
Match across 50+ roasters.
Brew method, roast preference, flavour direction, milk or black, frequency. Routes to a specific coffee with a flexible subscription; the match algorithm re-runs on every reorder.
RevenueHunt customer stories
9.8% completion-to-purchase, 76.9% completion, two-quiz architecture.
The anti-ageing case study, the Extreme Kids World case study, and the Skinology case study show the format running on real Shopify stores.
How to build an ecommerce quiz
Three steps. The whole build, for a typical 5-to-7-question quiz with 50-SKU recommendation logic, fits in a single working session.
Fig. 03 Three steps from blank Quiz Builder to running quiz. Step 1 sets the logic; step 2 produces the customer-facing experience; step 3 connects answers to the rest of the marketing stack.
Decision tree, 1 minute
Pick the recommendation logic
Voting, scoring, fixed list, slots, or display logic. The decision tree in our recommendation systems guide walks the choice in under a minute. Default to Voting unless the catalogue is tiny or the answer pattern is a personality archetype.
Quiz Copilot AI assists
Write the questions and link the catalogue
Three to seven multiple-choice or picture-choice questions, each mapped to upvoted products or scoring variables. On Built for Shopify, Quiz Copilot AI can draft both the questions and the product linking on a first pass. On Shopify Legacy, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, and Standalone, the setup is manual via the Link Products tab.
First-party data layer
Hand answers to the post-quiz stack
Connect the email platform (Klaviyo, HubSpot, Omnisend, ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp), Shopify Flows, and analytics so the recommendation, the answers, and the order flow downstream. This is the first-party data layer that keeps converting after the quiz session ends.

Ecommerce quiz vs product recommendation quiz
These two terms get used interchangeably and they shouldn't be. The relationship is hierarchical: a product recommendation quiz is one type of ecommerce quiz, but the category includes other formats that aren't built to recommend a SKU.
Fig. 04 Set diagram: the umbrella term "ecommerce quiz" contains all five types; "product recommendation quiz" is type 1 (and the SKU-recommending halves of types 2 and 3).
If your goal is to lift conversion rate and AOV with matched products, you want a product recommendation quiz: the format covered in detail on RevenueHunt's product recommendation quiz home page. If your goal is broader (gating a lead magnet, running a brand archetype, building a content quiz), an ecommerce quiz is the right umbrella term and recommendation logic is one piece of it.
Why ecommerce quizzes work now
Three things changed in the last 24 months. The combination means a quiz now pays back faster and depreciates slower than the same effort spent on a static landing page.
01
Third-party cookies degraded
Retargeting yields fell across nearly every paid channel, putting first-party data at a structural premium. A quiz captures it consciously, not by tracking.
02
Mobile shoppers won't filter
Filter-heavy category pages stall on mobile. A five-button picture-choice converts at a fraction of the friction.
03
AI-assisted setup is here
Quiz Copilot AI on Built for Shopify collapses the build effort that used to gate non-technical merchants out of the format.
Frequently asked questions
Is an ecommerce quiz the same as a Shopify quiz?
A Shopify quiz is an ecommerce quiz that runs on Shopify. The mechanic is the same; the install path differs by platform. RevenueHunt's app runs on Shopify (Built for Shopify and Legacy), WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Wix, and Standalone. The recommendation logic is identical across versions; the setup affordances (native scoring, Quiz Copilot AI) are richest on Built for Shopify.
How long should an ecommerce quiz be?
Five to seven questions is the modal length and the sweet spot for completion. Three is sometimes enough for a simple finder; ten starts costing meaningful completion rate. Aim for the shortest quiz that produces a confidently matched result, not the longest one your catalogue could justify.
How much does an ecommerce quiz cost to build?
RevenueHunt has a free tier (up to 100 responses per month) and paid plans from $39/mo. Build time on Built for Shopify with Quiz Copilot AI is typically under an hour for a first version. On Shopify Legacy or non-Shopify platforms, expect two to four hours for the same scope because question writing, choice linking, and scoring logic are manual.
Do ecommerce quizzes work for B2B?
Yes. B2B is where guided selling started, and a quiz-led configurator is often the highest-converting flow in a B2B catalogue. RevenueHunt has a dedicated guided selling quiz format for the patterns specific to B2B.
How do I measure if an ecommerce quiz is working?
Five metrics matter: start rate, completion rate (target above 70%), quiz-to-purchase conversion (the RevenueHunt benchmark across 45M+ responses is 5.5%), AOV uplift vs non-quiz orders, and email capture rate. The full metric stack is covered in product quiz metrics.
